Retro Coffee Pot, Tureen and Waratah Spice containers

A glorious day in Melbourne unearthed some wonderful retro finds.  The star performers included a 6 person retro coffee set with milk jug and sugar bowl, a wonderful retro tureen and a set of five Waratah Aluminium Spice containers.  All will arrive at Stall 20 Waverley Antique Bazaar this weekend.

This is a great design for a Retro Tureen, it is not marked and has a small chip in the seat of the lid but is still really useable

Vintage Salt and Pepper Sets

If you are looking for something to collect, vintage salt and pepper shakers are a great option.  They come in a wide range of different objects, colours and textures.  They are still very affordable, easy to display and don't take up a lot of space.

I recently acquired over 250 sets of Vintage Salt and Pepper Shakers through a deceased estate.  They are all wonderful pieces including some absolutely exquisite items from the 40s and 50s all the way through to the 60s and 70s .  Needless to say I'll be featuring salt and pepper shakers in a few more blog posts.  My task for this weekend was to choose the first 20 sets to head to Waverley Antique Bazaar.  This was actually harder to do than it sounds as I'm starting to become quite attached to many of them.  So if you are looking for something to collect - try vintage Salt and Pepper Shakers.

Edwardian Furniture

It's not often that I find or sell really old pieces as I tend to gravitate around retro pieces.  But I've just came across a beautiful Edwardian Fire Screen with a floral tapestry design and a delightful Edwardian Cane Child's Chair.

They will both be at Stall M20 Waverley Antique Bazaar on Thursday this week.

The fire screen measures 83 cm high by 57.5 cm wide and the child's chair is 51 cm at the back and 27 cm  at the seat.  Both pieces are in very good condition.

Chinese Vintage display

Another cold day in Melbourne and another early start around the markets.  Today I found an unusually abundant amount of Chinese influenced vintage pieces.  I found a wonderful green ginger jar with a really pretty bird, which I think is a pheasant but may be a hawk.  Two wonderful Tea caddies and the cutest pair of vintage Chinese baby figurines.

These items are now at my stall at Waverley Antique Bazaar (Stall M20).

Vintage Gifts for Him

Today was one of the coldest days of the year in Melbourne.  And being Melbourne we had it all: sun, rain, wind and hail.

But the bad weather does not stop a dedicated shopper, and it often brings some surprises. Today's shopping unearthed gifts for him, which for me is quite unusual.  We found footy teaspoons, some great vintage miniature cars in a delightful box, some sherry glasses with a blue monk that requires some more research and a retro etched glass serving tray.

These goodies will be heading to Waverley Antique Bazaar Stall M20 on the weekend.

My vintage fish collection

Welcome to Retro Chick and our first blog post.  For my first post I'm sharing my Vintage Fish Plate Collection.  My husband and I bought our very first fish plate about 14 years ago.  Our first plate was not a great example and bore no makers mark, but it was the start of a larger obsession.

Our fish plate collecting soon turned to Shorter and Son,  Wembley Ware and Jim Beam fish decanters.  Today I'm showing the Shorter and Son collection of which this picture is just a fraction of the collection.

Shorter and Son Fish plates date from the 1950's and 60's and come in a diverse range of colour and styles.  Most vintage shops have the common yellow with green trim but you have to be a serious hunter both physically and on-line to find the rarer colours.  Over the years our Vintage Fish collection has grown to consume a number of crates in addition to what is on display.

My most complete set, pictured below will allow an 8 person dinner party - something I really hope to do one day.

Other pieces in the set include fish Casserole dishes and fish lemon wedge holders

Shorter and Son also produced a slightly different style of fish plates with kissing fish and swirling fish, I don't have very much in this pattern range but they pop up now any again.

This little dish has to be my oldest fish plate.  I have three of them all with varying degrees of major fading but have not been able to find any other similar pieces except maybe the salt shaker further down the post.

With the exception of the plate above, all pieces have a mark like the one detailed on the left.  But my really old piece has the mark on the right.

We found this platter at the Tyabb Packing house.  It measures in at 55cm long.  We haven't found any other platters this large, this must be for a good fishing day.

Shorter and Son Fish Plates come in a great range of colours and shapes and look great on display.

So, have I finished this collection?  The only piece I would add is a pepper shaker to match this salt shaker below.  From memory we came across this salt shaker on the UK ebay site but have never found the pair.

To end this post, I had to include the fish that started this obsession.  I hope you enjoyed your introduction to vintage fish plate collecting
